Terry found himself constantly answering calls from his silent alarm system because of break-ins. His building was soon peppered with 40 bullet holes. A root of bitterness began to grow in his heart. He stood on the loading dock one afternoon, glaring into the complex and felt God speaking to his heart. “Look past the drug dealers and look at the children. If you minister to the people, you won’t be able to hate them.” Terry looked up and saw children everywhere!
He did the only thing he could think of. He bought about two hundred dollars worth of basketballs and wrote on them “Jesus loves you, from Mr. Terry,” and threw them over the fence into the complex. Before long, his property was over run with kids! At first they were suspicious of this man and his motives but soon realized that he just wanted to be their friend. He began to fill his station wagon with kids to come visit his home. They came over to swim, eat hot dogs, and Rice Krispie treats. He and his wife, Kathy tried taking them to church with them, but soon realized that they weren’t welcome. Their social graces were non-existent. These were the most unruly children imaginable. Most of them were literally raising themselves. They began having Sunday school for them in the office. They were constantly looking for more effective ways to minister to the children. In 1996 Terry had an opportunity to go to New York for an intense internship in inner city work. He trained with Bill Wilson at Metro Ministries who worked with twenty thousand inner-city children a week. Upon his return from new York Terry started Metro Inner-City Sunday School now known as Metro Kids Konnection.
